Natural Treatment for Heartburn: How to Make it Work for You

People who suffer from heartburn usually find themselves in wanting of a treatment that works. Natural treatment for heartburn works as well as any other available treatments. However, the effectiveness of these natural treatments—or any treatment, for that matter—is how well a person can keep his or her self on track all the time. Even the simplest of tips will not work in achieving full healing without sufficient self-control, discipline, and determination.

The first tip in the process of treating heartburn is to eat food that will not cause damage when ingested. Some food—with sharp edges or rough textures—ends up inflicting small wounds in the lower esophageal sphincter. Such food must be avoided to keep this from happening.

Additionally, beverages with alcohol must be avoided. This is especially true for people whose regular diets include regular consumption of alcoholic beverages. For natural treatment for heartburn to become effective, staying away from such beverages, and even drinks that are considered acidic, which include orange juice or lemon juice, is important. This, of course, includes staying away from carbonated beverages which include popular sodas and cola products.

The third tip is to keep off the spicy food. Unfortunately for lovers of spicy food, spicy food causes heartburn. This requires some changes in the foods included in the diet. This is because under no circumstances will people with heartburn successfully employ the natural treatment for heartburn by carrying on with spicy or acidic food.

The fourth way of applying natural treatment for heartburn, and particularly interesting, is to stop smoking. Treating heartburn the natural way requires the elimination, not only of smoking but also of products that contain high levels of caffeine. This means removing smoking from one’s habits, and reducing if not eliminating consumption of things such as coffee.

Of course, tips to make natural treatments for heartburn work won’t be complete if it doesn’t advise against stuffing tons of food into one’s mouth. Chewing slowly aids in digestion. Easily digestible food like mash potatoes, soup, oatmeal, and even scrambled eggs works very well with helping the human body to heal itself naturally from wounds incurred during heartburn.

While these are extremely simple and may seem second nature to many, people who experience heartburn need to recognize that it’s in the implementation that it becomes difficult. Determination, discipline and self-control are important in making sure that all the previous tips in fact lead up to the desired result of natural treatment for heartburn. While the speed of recovery differs from patient to patient, it is nonetheless the equally required of them to keep healthier lives in the future, eating healthier food in moderation.

Natural Heartburn Treatments

Natural Heartburn Treatments

Natural heartburn treatments are reputedly the best treatment methods for heartburns, gerd and acid reflux. There are probably dozens of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescribed medications and drugs such as:

1. Acid suppressing medicines

2. Ulcer healing drugs

3. Antispasmodic drugs

4. Antacids

5. H2 blockers

6. Foaming agents

7. Proton pump inhibitors

8. Prokinetics

9. Alginates

These OTC medications and drugs neutralize the stomach acids, reduce acid production or prevent the flow of acids to the esophagus. While they are effective, they are likely to be palliative, ie does not deal with the root cause of heartburn to prevent recurrence and you have to constantly depend on them to suppress your heartburn condition. There have been reported side effects such as allergies when using the medications.

Natural heartburn treatments tend to be curative in nature. Other than relieving you of the symptoms, they also treat the root causes, hence bringing you long term healing. That said, not all can completely treat heartburn without you making appropriate changes to your lifestyle and dietary habits. Both have to complement each other.

1. Natural Heartburn Treatments – Diet

a. Avoid foods like have relaxing effect on the sphincter muscle that stands between the stomach and the esophagus. Foods like nuts, caffeine, greasy foods, peppermint and chocolate have that effect.

b. Avoid carbonated beverages like sodas and other gassy drinks as they induce belching which forces the acid juices up the esophagus.

c. Avoid eating 2 – 3 hours before sleeping time. Allow the food to be digested long before you sleep so that the acid juices do not have a chance to flow upwards.

d. Consuming fibrous foods like breads and cereals and vegetables like celery, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce and peas would improve absorption of digestive juices and gas.

2. Natural Heartburn Treatments – Sleeping Posture

Tilt the head of your bed such that it is inclined. When we are sleeping, it is easier for the digestive juices to escape to the esophagus so by adjusting the bed, it prevents acid reflux.

3. Natural Heartburn Treatments – Lifestyle Habits

a. Smoking triggers heartburns especially after a heavy meal. So avoid that.

b. Wear loose clothing and belts. Tight clothing adds unnecessary pressure on our stomachs and forcibly pushes the digestive juices up.

c. Losing weight for obese folks would relieve the pressure on the stomach exerted by the organs. This reduces any chance of the acidic juices from surging upwards.

4. Natural Heartburn Treatments – Home Remedies

a. Ginger

Ginger is one age old ingredient used in natural heartburn treatments. It can be cooked and consumed together with your food. Grind it and mix with lukewarm water and drink the refreshing juice.

b. Water

Drinking lots of water help to dilute the stomach juices and also aids discharge of toxins naturally and quickly from our bodies.

c. Green Tea and Other Herbal Teas

Drinking green tea is helpful as it aids digestion. Herbal teas like chamomile, ginger and peppermint tea have been found to be useful in stomach tissue repair. Drinking tea after dinner can effectively prevent heartburns.

d. Licorice Extract

Natural Heartburn Treatments | Causes

Natural Heartburn Treatments – Causes of Heartburn and Symptoms

Natural heartburn treatments are simple yet powerful treatments anyone can apply. However, before we look at that, it is important that we understand more about heartburn, its causes and symptoms so that we can appreciate the natural treatments we can use to cure our heartburn. More than 50 million Americans suffer from heartburn.

Heartburn does not happen when our hearts are set on fire. As a matter of fact, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It is a burning sensation in our chest behind the breastbone, the lower chest to be more precise, the most common form of acid reflux. This is often accompanied with a bitter sour acidic taste in our mouth. This either happens after a heavy meal or when we are in sleeping position. Heartburn can last from a few minutes to hours.

Natural Heartburn Treatments - Symptoms of Heartburn

Other than the burning sensation, some folks also suffer from other symptoms like:

1. Sore throat
2. Excessive burping
3. Heavy saliva
4. Dry cough
5. Difficulties in swallowing food
6. Deep chest pains

Natural Heartburn Treatments - Causes of Heartburn

When we consume food, the food will pass through the esophagus and enter the stomach via a muscle called sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach. Under normal circumstances, the sphincter would close up once the food enters the stomach. However, if it is not functioning well, or when the stomach is very full after a heavy meal, it allows the stomach juices like hydrochloric acid to flow into the esophagus, causing heartburn. Here’s a list of the causes:

1. Diet

a. Acidic foods such as caffeinated drinks, alcohol and citrus juice increase the acidity in our stomachs and can irritate the esophagus.

b. Fatty foods are harder to digest and remain in our stomachs longer and more time for the digestive juices to regurgitate, ie flow up the esophagus.

c. Foods that can cause the sphincter muscle to relax such as chocolate, peppermint and spearmint allow the digestive juices to escape into the esophagus.

d. Eating food in large portions cause our stomach to generate larger amounts of acid juices. This increases the likelihood of regurgitation of these acids into the esophagus.

e. Sleeping immediately after a meal is not a good idea. By lying down, we set the condition for the digestive juices to escape to the esophagus.

2. Pregnancy

Pressure on your stomach because of the fetus increases the potential for heartburn.

3. Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medications

OTC medicines and drugs for asthma, arthritis, heart problems and high blood pressure can induce excessive acid production in our stomachs.

4. Overweight

Being overweight could add pressure on our stomachs and result in heartburn.

5. Smoking

Smoking actually encourages digestive juice production and induces relaxation of the sphincter. These are ideal conditions for heartburn to surface.

6. Tight Clothing

Wearing tight clothes and belts has the effect of adding pressure on our stomachs.

7. Hiatus Hernia

Hiatus hernia is a condition which happens when part of the stomach penetrates the diaphragm into the chest. As a result, the sphincter cannot close properly and acid juices can escape.
